The Green, Green Grass

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Andrew Caxton As the summer months begin to come closer, people will be thinking about taking care of their lawns. When you are making your game plan for caring for your lawn, you need to also work in some tips on how to make your lawn greener and healthier than it has ever been. Isnt there a yard that you drive by that you admire? Your lawn can look just like that if you take the time and effort to determine what your grass needs to make it thicker and greener. Nutrients, proper maintenance, and many other factors all come together to make your grass what it is. That is why it is so important to learn more about how to take care of your lawn so that you can make it as beautiful and attractive as possible. One of the many factors that may be influencing the health of your grass is its location. If your yard is shaded by a tree or building, then it cannot get the sunlight that it needs each day. You will find that the grass color begins to dim if it does not get proper sunlight. Trimming the branches of your tree or trees can make a big impact on the amount of sunlight that your yard receives. Another thing that you need to think about is how much traffic goes through your lawn. People walking on the grass can cause the grass to become oxygen deficient. It sometimes blocks the aeration which doesnt allow oxygen into the grass or water. Aerating the lawn is the remedy for this. If there are flat spaces on your lawn or if you notice the soil is compacted, then you need to aerate the lawn. It is important to refrain from aerating in the summer, because it will stress the grass. Aerating should be done in the spring or possibly in the fall. Watering the grass correctly is another facet of maintenance that can help to make your grass healthier. It is best to water early in the morning, because then the water has time to soak into the ground before the sun gets hot enough to evaporate it. Water the yard evenly, instead of just patches. Make sure that there is not any water standing on your lawn, as well as watching to make sure that the grass does not become too dry on those hot days. All of these things will help keep your grass healthy and bright green. Another thing that you need to beware of is lawn thatch and debris trying to take over your yard. To keep this from occurring, you need to rake your lawn regularly and remove any thatch that is over a half-inch high in your yard. This helps to keep the lawn aerated and allows water and nutrients to get through the grass into the soil. The composition of your soil is also an important factor in how your lawn looks. Your soil should have the right grain texture, as well as the right pH balance to keep your grass healthy. If it is lacking in some of the needed nutrients, then you can add fertilizer or compost to the soil to help make up the deficit. This helps the grass to stay healthier and greener. The fertilizer that you need to get depends upon what the soil is lacking, the problems that your grass has, and the time of year that you are going to be using the fertilizer. Another issue arises when you mow your grass. Your grass has to be cut properly or it will not grow properly. If you cut it too close, then it may stress your grass, which can cause it to become brown. If you do not cut it enough, then the water and sunlight will have a hard time getting to the soil. To help your lawn become greener, you only need to aerate, give the soil proper nutrients, mow properly, and watch the environment. By keeping track of all these different area, you will be helping your grass to become greener and healthier. Companies that Offer Satellite Phones

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Paul_Cris]Paul Cris In a world where there is no worthwhile landline connectivity or cellular services available in nearly 80% of the land mass, leave alone the oceans, the seas, the mountains, the forests and the deserts; you need a really efficient telephone service that works anywhere and everywhere! The answer is satellite phone! You can reach any area on earth with relative ease. Well, who are the people who offer such a breathtaking technology? Let us see: (1)Iridium Satellite: Voice and data solutions are offered by Iridium satellite practically to every nook and cranny of earth, inclusive of oceans, mountains, forests, deserts etc! They are, in essence, the only voice and data solutions provider of global magnitude. They have sixty-six Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) Satellites, cross-linked, covering the entire earth. They have services specifically for heavy industries and government customers. They also have a special data services with a 2.4 kbps throughput and direct Internet data services with a 10 kbps throughput. Their handset is very compact weighing less than 21bs, which enables easy mobility. (2)Thuraya Satellite Phone: Good handset, can reach remote areas. They, however, are concentrating more in the Middle East Region. Handset is compact. It is a Satellite Cell Phone! Europe, Africa Middle East is covered. (3)Inmarsat Mini M Satellite Phone: It is designed as a laptop and therefore a bit bulky though it is sturdy. The drawback is that you cannot use it from a speeding vehicle; or, for that matter cannot access from Artic or Antarctic regions. (4)Globalstar: They have about 48 satellites orbiting the earth. Wide coverage, therefore, possible. They are the ones who offer the most cost effective services, which, of course, is possible because most of the time they access their cellular network. Satellite is used only when it has lost a signal. The coverage is not substantial. Carving a Stone House Sign

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Steve Walker If you would like to try carving your own stone house sign and you have no previous experience, you may find some of the tips below will help.First choose a suitable stone, unless you are experienced at carving, select a soft stone such as Bath stone. You will need at least one good chisel, a quarter inch steel splitter will do the job. A steel club hammer, as small as possible, a straight edge or square and a scriber, a sharpened masonry nail will do, and a Riffle file would also be very handy.A riffle file is a small metal rasp with two shaped heads. If you dont have a riffle, use a small fine rasp. Tips: Search in your local street market for second hand tools, it may save you money. If you find a small club hammer with a short handle and a hollow worn into the side of the head, rejoice, you have found an original stone carvers hammer! Cut down the handle of an ordinary club hammer to about six inches, this will make it much easier to handle and control. When using the hammer with a chisel, strike with the side of the head, this will help you keep greater control of the both the hammer and the chisel, use the thumb pressed against the head or handle to help keep the hammer steady. To hold the chisel correctly first lay the chisel across the bottom joints of the fingers and fold the fingers over to grip the chisel, do not clench your fist, the thumb rests on the shaft of the chisel to help with control.Keep both your elbows tight into your side and not waiving around in space, this will help with control, and also prevent shoulder ache. If you find this difficult, try to hold a pencil under your armpit while working! To make a small scriber or point try using a sharpened Oboe masonry nail. I suggest trying to carve out a sign in relief, that is where the carving stands proud of the background, rather like a cameo. Leave a raised border around the edge to reduce the amount of work. Choose a style of font that suits your house or design of house sign. However, I suggest not to use a font with thin or narrow sections, as these can be fragile when carving. You could include a motif , for instance a flower or leaf pattern but do keep it simple for your first effort. Mark out the layout of your house sign or number in pencil. When you are happy about the design use the scriber and straight edge to scribe in deeply all of the straight lines in the design, even the straight lines on the lettering or numbers, then pencil in the scribed lines. When you are carving you will find the edge of the chisel can be lodged into the scribed lines for greater accuracy. One of the most difficult problems to overcome is how to hold the piece of work steady while carving. To solve this problem fix the sign to a larger slab of stone or paving slab with plaster of Paris. When the job is done simply tap a chisel into joint between the sign and the backing, it will just pop off! The first task with all stone work is to remove the waste material. Keep away from the lettering or border, remove as much of the waste as possible before tackling the important bits. Approach the edges of the letters gradually, dont try to do too much too quickly. Carving stone is really a process of shaving off layers until the required shape is achieved. To finish off, sand down with a coarse grit wet and dry abrasive paper, used dry not wet. Good luck, and please let me know how you get on, you can contact me through my website Steve Walker has been a craftsman in stone and marble for 40 years. By Mina Dimakis-Lev Developing an anti-aging program is the newest scientific approach to helping you live a longer, healthier and more active life. Some of the greatest benefits include improved mental and cognitive funtion, stronger cardiovascular system, increased lean body mass and decreased body fat, improve sexual function, fewer wrinkles, thicker skin and better skin tone. The main components of anti-aging to include in your program are:Optimal nutrition, proper skincare, regular excercise, hormone replacement therapy, and lifestyle behavioral changes such as smoke, stress management, and reduced alcohol asumption. Excercise is the simplest and least expensive anti-aging tool. You can work with a personal trainer, and better yet, participation in a regular fitness program will provide you needed exercise benefits. Be sure to check with your physician before beginning any rigorous exercise program. If your body is armed with the ammunition to defend itself, your body will have stronger immunity and reduced disease, and you’ll find yourself seeking medical attention less frequently. Through the synergistic action of all these components, anti-aging scientists have observed a significant change and even reversal of some aging effects. Now it’s your turn to observe these changes in your skin and body. Discuss additional options for addressing changes to your skin with your skincare professional professional. Unemployment Blues: Maintaining Emotional Balance

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Virginia Bola, PsyD When we are under stress, we start to experience wide swings in mood. In a new relationship, for example, we are ecstatic when the telephone rings, depressed and tearful when we dont hear anything for two or three days. When we are ill, we are elated when tests come back negative, fearful and exhausted when a problem is identified. Working under a demanding tyrant, we are upbeat with any hint of praise and despondent when the inevitable criticism splashes in our faces. The pervasiveness of being out of work touches so many parts of our lives: our finances, our family, our egos, and our inner sense of self. Because the anxiety of unemployment reaches to the core of our comfortable lifestyles, we suffer from a changing array of intense emotional ups and downs. Some kind of emotional balance is necessary if we are to stay healthy, maintain our relationships, and be able to effectively function in job search. Reaching such a balance is difficult and made more so by our own inner turmoil. How do we re-establish that balance that will make us feel like our old selves, whole, optimistic, and complete? Here are a couple of strategies to try. 1. Regain a broader perspective. When we are confronted by a host of problems, we tend to put on blinders and only see the obstacles that are staring us in the face. We lose touch with what else is happening in the greater world we inhabit. Our conversation narrows to the one subject that dogs us night and day the need to find work. Friends become bored with our egocentric outlook and relationships suffer from our obsession with our present misfortune. We may become prickly because of the fear and anger we are experiencing. We may still harbor anger at being laid off and our bitterness seeps into the affectionate ties we have with others. Despite the discomfort and dangers of your present situation, remember that a whole universe exists out there that is totally ignorant and indifferent to your fate. Try to live in both worlds. During the time you have scheduled for job search, make that your total focus. For the rest of the day, enlarge your view to see what else is happening around you. Read the newspaper, watch the news, keep up with a changing world. Spend time finding out what is happening in your childrens lives and how the workday went for your spouse. Take a walk and visit with neighbors to talk about local events and community politics. Not only will you be more welcome when you are no longer totally consumed by your jobless state, but you will feel more like your old self, a cog in the real world rather than an isolated alien. 2. Develop your empathy. We all need to learn, as the old adage says, to walk a mile in anothers moccasins. You are so anxious and fearful about the future that it is easy to dismiss the worries of others that seem petty in comparison. Remember that to someone who has just been diagnosed with a terminal disease, your layoff may seem trivial. The significance of our problems is always relative. Because they are so close to us, and dominate our minds, we tend to feel that OUR problems are the biggest and that no one really understands the challenges we face. To turn our backs on our own concerns, at least occasionally, and to reach out to understand and help others with their own difficulties, gives us some distance from the ballooning fears that threaten to overwhelm us. Distance confers objectivity and detachment, qualities we desperately need if we are to develop creative solutions. Bury yourself for a while in the problems of others and you start to see that nothing is quite as awful as those who are involved believe it is. Youll find that, as a dispassionate outsider, you can readily see the options and alternatives available. Your teenaged daughters devastation over her boyfriends rejection may seem like a gross over-reaction. Try to look at it from her point of view and youll notice the similarity to your own situation the pain and discomfort of a personal world turned upside down. Explore the frustration and anger of your brother-in-laws stymied career and youll experience the same emotional dejection at his lack of success as you feel after an interview that didnt look promising. Our problem-solving abilities thrive with practice and helping others is a marvelous way to develop your own skills while giving them your much needed support. Start to personally identify with the victims of natural disasters who not only have no job, but are also without a roof over their head and desperately missing loved ones who were lost. Every time we move a little out of our circumscribed personal worlds, our vision expands and our problems shrink in comparison, allowing us to rise above them and deal with them forcefully as we never can when they loom large and insurmountable. Aromatherapy E. Indian Sandalwood - Aphrodisiac

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By KG Stiles As an aphrosisiac Sandalwood is useful for balancing and toning the female reproductive organs. Research scientists have discovered the chemical substance responsible for Sandalwood’s erotic effect on our senses. Men’s underarm perspiration releases andosterone, a substance similar in chemical structure as the male hormone testosterone. Andosterone in light concentrations smells similar to Sandalwood. Thus the aroma of Sandalwood, similar to a man’s underarm perspiration, sends out a barely perceptible but highly effective erotic signal to the opposite sex. Maybe that’s why men often choose to use Sandalwood fragrance as a way to increase their manly aura of attraction to females. Sandalwood’s restorative effects make it a good tonic for the immune system. Its immune stimulating properties act to increase white blood cell production. An excellent tonic for the kidneys and adrenals which are heavily impacted by the stresses of our daily life. Use Sandalwood to promote kidney and adrenal function as well as tonify the bladder, kidney & urinary tract. Sandalwood also supports the circulatory systems and enhances lymph, nerve and blood supply to all of our organs and systems and has traditionally been used for skin regeneration and healing. As a regulating oil Sandalwood is beneficial for mature skin and known to balance both dry and oily skin conditions. Consider Sandalwood for treating skin rash, eczema and psoriasis. A natural antiseptic it is helpful for treating acne, blend with Basil, Chamomile or Tea Tree oils to enhance this effect. Sandalwood is used in Indian temples, as well as in churches around the world in religious ceremonies for worshiping the divine. Use Sandalwood to enhance your meditation and to open your Base Chakra which connects you with the planetary family of human kind, as well as to your own personal family and your local community. Sandalwood reconciles our inner conflicts and contradictions and gently supports us to engage in the subtle play of nuances inherent to life as paradox! In Ayurvedic Medicine, an ancient system of healing practiced in India, the sweet aroma of Sandalwood is used to regulate and pacify both Vata and Pitta imbalances. Symptoms of Vata imbalance are premenstrual syndrome, constipation, insomnia, restlessness, nervousness and anxiety or worry. Symptoms of Pitta imbalance include feelings of frustration and anger, tendency to emotional upset and over reaction, high blood pressure and an inability to relax and go with the flow. True East Indian Sandalwood continues to rise in price almost daily. It has been restricted for exportation for some time now and its value is fast becoming beyond price. Sadly Traders of East Indian Sandalwood think we may no longer be able to procure this oil in the near future. BLEND WITH: Atlas Cedarwood or Himalayan Cedarwood. Sandalwood smoothes and anchors any aromatic blend. PLEASE NOTE: There are many cheap, synthetic copies of aromatic oils, but these are not recommended for therapeutic use. For best results purchase the highest quality oils you can possibly find. Use certified organic essential oils, or oils that have been tested and are pesticide free. Aromatherapy is a gentle and noninvasive complementary health care system used for balancing and synchronizing your body, mind, spirit and emotions to enhance your health. Properly administered essential oils are a natural, safe and effective way to enhance your health and well-being and can produce satisfying results where other methods have failed. Secret of Strategy - Part 2

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Paul Lemberg How to Create Strategies That Work In Today’s Markets. Of course you’ve heard that when you do what you’ve always done, you’ll likely get what you’ve always got. In this case that means playing the tactical game: coming up with acceptable–or worse–comfortable options and executing them as time permits. Likely, what you’ll get is business as usual, and things will be… well, they’ll be fine. But “fine” may not be what you’re after, and you are probably reading a series called “How to Create Strategies That Work” so you can do better–perhaps much better… And if you are willing to take some time and do your homework: the research, inquiry, analysis, synthesis, and the activation of strategy–you can add dramatically more power to each one of your individual tactics, and potentially revolutionize your entire business. In the beginning of this series I showed you how to start the process of selecting a market-dominating business and marketing strategy. The first four steps are: Set your visionGather environmental and competitive intelligenceTake stock of your organization’s strengths and weaknessesAnswer the Global Strategy Question I covered those in The Secrets of Strategy, Part 1. In this article I’m going to cover the next four steps: Establish decisive objectivesRate and rank your “SWOTs”Match your internal and external factors to identify strategic alternativesSelect the highest-impact strategies for implementation Establish Decisive Objectives Strategy is contextual. This means you should not make any kind of strategic decision–choosing strategy A over Strategy B, for instance–without first setting a context with Decisive Objectives. The word decisive is from the Latin decidere, which means to cut off. Decisive objectives are the goals that cut off irrelevant business opportunities and distracting details. They define the boundaries of your company’s efforts and direction, and establish the measures by which you will gauge your success. This step is to select company-defining goals, the attainment of which will mean your vision has started to become a reality. These objectives or goals should relate to the following: In what markets will you do business? What market share will you have? Will you be a marginal player with a small percentage, a big player with a significant portion of the market, or will you dominate your market and crush all competition?Where will you operate geographically? This question ties back to the issue of market share; you might dominate the market locally but be a small player nationally. How much revenue and profit will you earn? Larger revenue goals will have different strategic needs. What impact will your business have on your industry, your community, your world? How will you exit your business? Will you run the business and eventually pass it on to family members? Will you sell it privately? Will you go public? These are examples of the kinds of goals which shape your company. The decisive objectives create the context for the strategy alternatives you generate.Rate and rank your “SWOTs”Previously, you analyzed your external environment and internal strengths and weaknesses. Now rate and rank the most important factors.Evaluate each external factor: is it an opportunity to be taken advantage of, a threat to be defended against, or is simply something neutral you can safely ignore? Do the same for your internal factors: are they strengths to capitalize upon, weaknesses which much be bolstered or outsourced, or neutral conditions?Using your Decisive Objectives as a guide, select amongst the potential opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses, those factors you consider critical to the success of your business. (Ignore the neutral factors.)Group the critical factors into internal and external. Rate each internal factor from .01 to .99 based on its perceived importance to your business. The total should add up to 1.0. Do the same for the external factors.Select the top five to ten internal factors and external factors for matching. Match your internal and external factors to identify strategic alternatives Matching combines each internal factor with an external factor, generating a potentially relevant strategy. A software manufacturer might match an internal strength such as flexibility with an external opportunity of a new law in a related industry, yielding a strategic alternative to reconfigure the software and provide solutions to the new legal requirements. Or, a duck farmer might match his internal strength of breeding expertise with an external opportunity demanding low-fat, high-protein foods to yield a strategy selling low- fat duck. Strengths are matched with opportunities to create SO strategies. These are generally your strongest, highest leverage options. Strengths match with threats to create ST strategies. These use your natural assets to minimize external threats to existing revenue streams and your current competitive position. But since the best defense is often a strong offense, you may find yourself reverting to an SO strategy– typically a better alternative. WO strategies use external opportunities to reduce the impact of internal weaknesses. Of course, you may simply choose to put your resources into areas of strength and outsource weak factors. WT strategies are the weakest of all: defensive approaches designed to minimize internal weaknesses or external threats. Sometimes necessary to protect weakening revenue streams, there are often other, more powerful approaches that take better advantage of company strengths. This process is often called SWOT, named for the four types of internal and external factors. I prefer to call it SOT, since the most powerful options will not pay much attention to weaknesses. In our business philosophy you will gain more ground more quickly by amplifying and exploiting your strengths and outsourcing–or ignoring–the areas in which you are weak. Select specific strategies for implementation At this point many people choose to intuitively select which strategies to pursue. Others may prefer to bring rigor to the ranking process. This final step combines your various subjective analyses into a defined framework, giving each strategy a strategic impact score. Compare your new strategic alternatives to your list of critical factors to find those factors affected by each strategy. For each match, rank the attractiveness of the strategy relative to the factor from 1-4 (1–not attractive, 2–somewhat attractive, 3–reasonably attractive, 4–highly attractive) and multiply it by the factor’s rating (.01 - .99). Sum all the scores for that strategy into a total “strategic impact score.” Lastly, select your go-forward strategies based on the highest strategic impact scores. This is a demanding process with many steps, but it is well worth the effort. The strategies you create will take greatest of advantage of your strengths and opportunities, while protecting your company most effectively against threats and weaknesses. They will provide your company with leverage to make the most of your assets, your competitive position and your markets, all while insuring your strategies are consistent with your company’s vision and goals. Cash Advance Loans Explained

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jackie_Smith]Jackie Smith In reality, there is none. All of these terms describe the same thing. They are interchangeable names for a short-term (generally about 2 weeks) cash advance. Typically, money is borrowed until the next payday and then paid back with fees. If the borrower cannot pay the money back when payment is due, the loan period can be extended which usually allows the next payday to occur before payment is due. Additional fees apply for extensions of payment. Typically, providers will grant 3 to 4 payment extensions. If done via the Internet, the amount borrowed plus fees can be debited from the borrowers checking account. How much money can be borrowed? An applicant can request as little as $100 and as a returning customer may qualify for as much as $1,500 in payday loans depending on the provider. Fees Average fees are about $20.00 per $100.00 borrowed for a period of 2 weeks. Requirements Most lenders require the applicant for a payday loan to have a verifiable source of regular income that has been providing between $1.000 and $1.200 after taxes per month for at least 3 to 6 months, some require that the applicant be employed full time. Minimum age to be eligible for a payday loan is 18 with most providers. Most agencies will not grant loans to applicants that have outstanding applications with other payday loan providers or will decline applicants that have outstanding applications with more than one other agency. The applicant needs to have a current checking account that has been open and active for about 90 days. If applying for a payday loan over the Internet, access to a fax machine is required by most payday loan providers to submit the application and verification items which usually include a bank statement and a copy of a voided personal check. However, there are companies that offer so called fax free loans, which are approved without verification items on the condition that all information given in the application can be verified, e. g. via the telephone.
