Great Ways to Liven Up Wooden Serving Trays

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Lisa Koosis In the section of your local craft store dedicated to wood crafts, you can often find great wooden trays. Great for breakfast in bed, or for carrying food to the dinner table, they are available in a multitude of styles and sizes. They can be oval or rectangular. Some may have ornate, scalloped edges. They’re decorative and quaint and can make a great gift for a hard-to-buy-for loved one. The great part about purchasing a tray in the wood crafts section of the craft store is that they’re unfinished, a blank canvas ready for your special touches. Here are several crafty ideas for livening up a plain wooden serving tray. - Why not try decoupage? Wooden trays are the perfect canvas for stunning decoupage. It’s an easy technique that goes well with wood. Gift-wrap in bright colors or aesthetically-pleasing patterns is a perfect choice. Another great idea is to find a magazine with clip out your favorite pieces of artwork or photos. For a gift, why not consider using beloved photos of family or a special vacation? Once you’ve selected your papers, you’ll need to buy Mod Podge, which is readily available for purchase at most craft stores. A multi-purpose item, Mod Podge is sealer, glue and finisher all in one. For those unfamiliar with decoupage, a quick internet search on your favorite search engine will readily turn up instructions. - Use stickers. They’re not for kids only. Go ahead and buy a few. Stickers can be festive and fun. You can find stickers for just about any occasions. They’re a perfect way to brighten up plain wooden serving tray, particularly if used in conjunction with the decoupage technique. Stickers are also a great idea if you’re planning on doing this project with younger children. - Paint your tray. Wooden trays make a great medium on which to paint. Why not choose a bright solid or, for those with the gift of artistry, why not consider your tray a blank canvas and paint something wonderful? - Mosaic. Why not decorate your tray in bright bits of glass or tile? Wooden trays are particularly conducive to the techniques of mosaic. Again, visit your local craft store for supplies and directions. - Accessorize. Hot glue bows and buttons onto the side of the tray where they won’t interfere with items being carried. The possibilities for turning a plain wooden tray into something wonderful are endless. Combine techniques. Be imaginative. The sky is the limit in, and with some patience and thought, you can create a keepsake perfect for special occasions or as a gift for someone you cherish. Lose Weight by One Simple Step

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Ben Lynch The biggest thing I’ve noticed while in clinical rotation? People want to lose weight. Of course. After asking a bit of their eating habits - there tends to be a common error in their eating habits. They eat their biggest meal at night. This is a major weight gainer. Why? What do you do at night? Sleep. Metabolism is slow and calories are not burnt. Where do the calories go? To storage. Storage is fat once glycogen stores are filled in the body. Glycogen stores are replenished quickly if one is not exercising. So, in order to help prevent fat from appearing on your sides, eat your biggest meal at lunch. This way there is enough time in the day where your metabolism is clicking away. If you exercise, then the benefit is even larger. What to do at dinner? Eat complex carbohydrates - fiber. Salads are excellent. The increased fiber in salads make you full so you won’t want more. The trick with salads though is one tends to add a ton of salad dressing. Avoid this desire. Try to pick juicy red tomatoes, lemons, nice balsamic vinegar instead. Avoid high protein, high fat, high simple carbohydrate dinners. Aim for high fiber dinners. I eat my salads dry 90% of the time. Sounds crazy but they taste really good. Pick organic veggies if you can. Read my former post about which non-organic fruits and vegetables are the safest Point is simply: Do not eat late and avoid large meals after 1pm. Law Firms Should Look to Marketers as Rainmakers

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Robert Melillo Small and mid-sized law firms around the nation are faced with the proverbial question - what comes first the chicken or the egg? In the case of marketing, many firms are learning that marketing needs to come before client acquisition and investing in quality marketing is key. The competition among lawyers and law firms is too severe to view marketing as a luxury. Small and mid-sized law firms need to invest in marketing and view their marketing firm as their primary rainmaker. The right marketing firm will bring clients into a firm through a multi-faceted approach. Marketing for law firms should include: Internet marketing, local marketing including advertisements, networking, seminars and public relations among other forms of marketing. With a marketing firm focusing on their area expertise and the attorneys focusing on their area or areas of expertise success comes much easier. Internet marketing for attorneys is vital. Many small and mid-sized law firms are realizing that they do not need websites with all the bells and whistles. A clean, professional website that is seen by their target audience is much more effective than a state-of-the-art website that is seen by no one. The best marketing firms are having law firms spend less on website development and more on Internet marketing. Internet marketing is much more than search engine optimization and pay-per-click campaigns. The top marketing firms are also working with clients on webinars, optimized press releases, podcasts, social networking and more. In addition to a comprehensive Internet marketing campaign, marketing firms are using an integrated approach that focus on branding and targeting specific markets and populations. While the lawyers focus on practicing law the marketing firms are researching local opportunities to bring clients into the firm ranging from local ads in publications and church bulletins, to opportunities to be interviewed on the latest legal news. Optimized press releases and e-zine articles are a great way for lawyers to show expertise in a particular area, while the marketing firm stays on top of what the law firm can and can not say (for example, few marketing firms know they should not use the term “expert” to refer to lawyers in most areas of practice). The best marketing firms, whether local or not, can also plan and execute highly effective seminars and social events to expand the firm’s client base. The key is the marketing firm maximizing the law firm’s return on investment - the measure of a truly great rainmaker. The highly competitive legal industry requires firms to invest in high quality marketing that is specialized, diverse and integrated. The top marketing firms are offering this unique approach to small and mid-sized law firms around the nation. Robert Melillo, President, GM Sales & Marketing, White Hat Marketing, LLC (http://www.whitehatfirm.com) focuses on maximizing the return on investment in advertising, marketing, Internet marketing and search engine optimization. Tanning Bed Tips

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Sarah Wright So youve got your new tanning bed installed at home, and youre excited about the prospect of having the perfect tan all year round, without having to get out in the sun, and without having to go to your local tanning salon. But before you get carried away, its important to learn some useful tanning bed tips to make sure you get the most out of your tanning sessions, and to make sure you stay safe. One of the first tips Id like to give you is this: Be aware of your skin type. If youve used a tanning bed much before in the past, then you probably have a good idea of how much time it takes for you to tan. You dont want to over do it, because tanning bed can be dangerous to your skin. Although its not as damaging as the sun, it can still cause problems if you over use it. The first step to making sure you dont over-use it is knowing how much your skin type can safely take. Another important tip I have for you is this: Always use a good tanning lotion. This will help protect your skin, and I cant recommend using it strongly enough. You probably already know that the farer your skin is, the higher protection factor you need to be safe. Even if you have a dark complexion, its still a wise idea to use tanning lotion. Not only does it keep you safe, it also makes sure your kin looks nice when you have a tan. Also, it goes without saying that should never let yourself tan until you get burnt. Many people shrug this kind of advice off but realistically, if you let yourself get burnt too often, you are doing serious damage to your skin and increasing your risk of skin cancer. Okay, thats the scary part over. I hope these simple tips will help you get the most out of your tanning bed, as well as keep you safe. Sarah Wright likes to write about tanning beds, ever since she decided to get one herself. To find out more about tanning beds, includingcommercial tanning beds, be sure to visit her blog. Hostility Against “Jewish Holidays” to be History!

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By David Ben-Ariel Romans 8:7-8 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. We see some of this hostility hung over into the Millennium (the reign of the Kingdom of God) and quickly put in check by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. All - Jew, Israelite, Gentile - must become converted and have the law written upon the tablets of our hearts and minds, expressed in word and in deed, in attitude and in actions, by the grace of God (Heb. 8:1). Zechariah 14:17-18 17 And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, on them there will be no rain. 18 If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. Thankfully, many others will have a childlike attitude and humbly be excited to learn what most were never taught by their traditional teachers: Isaiah 2:2-4 2 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORDs house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. 3 Many people shall come and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths. For out of Zion shall go forth the Torah, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. Yeshua’s Bride will gladly follow His ways and celebrate the same biblical festivals as Him and avoid unclean ways and pagan holidays like the plague! Such abominations will be history and vain traditions trashed. Yeshua will not be unequally yoked. I’m happy to announce the biblical Sabbath, the biblical Festivals of the LORD, the biblical ways will be kept throughout all the earth, by ALL nations, under the glorious reign of the King - Yeshua - whom some of us honestly call Lord while others take His Name in vain, holding on to their idolatrous traditions of men (1 John 2:4). Matthew 5:17-19 17 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Revelation 22:14-15 4 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. 15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. Plea to Diehard Catholics & Protestants to Repent That way such folks won’t fall for what’s soon to occur, having been forewarned: Sorcerer-Pope to Bewitch Europe and Mislead the Masses! Come Lord Yeshua and destroy the darkness by the light of your Word, as foretold in the Law and the Prophets. All You Need To Know About Tummy Tuck Surgery But Were Afraid To Ask

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Tim Gorman The medical term for tummy tuck surgery is Abdominoplasty. It’s used to help make a protruding stomach a great deal firmer and slimmer. Basically, the procedure aims to reduce the size of the abdomen, and also to tone it up. It’s not an essential surgery, but is mostly undertaken by people who are unhappy about their body shape and want to improve their shape. Even though tummy tuck surgery may be considered a cosmetic procedure, it’s still a major operation and requires a substantial recovery period. You need to allow at least a few weeks for your body to be reasonably back to normal, and perhaps months before your recovery is complete. Tummy tuck surgery is often recommended for people who have been obese but then lost a great deal of weight, leaving them with excess hanging skin around the abdomen. This can also be a good remedy for women who’ve been left with sagging skin and stretch marks after pregnancy. The surgeon removes this excess skin and also any excess fat from the abdominal area. During the procedure the abdominal walls are also tightened. Because a tummy tuck is major surgery, the patient needs to be in good condition before even considering going ahead. Although many people assume that a tummy tuck can be used to help an obese person lose weight, in fact a reputable surgeon would advise the obese person to lose that weight by other means, such as diet and exercise, before undergoing a tummy tuck. It’s very important to listen to your surgeon if he recommends delaying your surgery so that you can lose weight. Obesity brings with it the possibility of complications during surgery, including respiratory issues and the risk of developing a blood clot (deep venous thrombosis), and also issues during recovery such as slow healing and infection. A tummy tuck is also not recommended for a woman who plans to become pregnant. It’s generally a much better idea to have the baby first and then get a tummy tuck. Remember, too, that having a tummy tuck will mean you have an abdominal scar. This is a major medical procedure, and this type of surgery will inevitably leave scarring. Naturally a good surgeon will always try to minimize the visibility of scarring, but it’s basically impossible to have no scar at all. Immediate Pain Relief For Gout

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Kathy Love Gout is a very painful health problem that usually effects the big toe. It can, however, effect other joints such as the fingers, knees, etc. It is caused by the build up of crystals of uric acid depositing in the tissues of the body. When the body is unable to break down uric acid it accumulates causing inflammation of the joint(s). Uric acid is also known for causing kidney stones. Normally, uric acid dissolves in your blood and then passes through your kidneys into your urine. Sometimes your body either produces too much or excretes too little of this acid. When that happens uric acid can build up forming sharp, needle-like crystals (urate) in a joint or surrounding tissue that causes pain, inflammation and swelling. The cause of intense pain is when inflammation occurs in the joint as white blood cells surround the uric acid crystals. This causes intense pain, heat and redness Gout occurs more often in men than it does in women, but women are more susceptible after menopause. Here are some things you can do for immediate pain relief: You can make a charcoal/flaxseed poultice. You mix 1/2 cup activated powdered charcoal and 3 tablespoons finely ground flaxseed. Add warm water until you create a paste. Put the paste directly on the affected area and cover with a cloth or some plastic. Change the dressing every four hours or leave on over night. Be sure to cover the poultice carefully as charcoal can stain your bedding or clothing. You can also take activated charcoal orally to lower uric acid levels. Take 1/2 teaspoon when you first wake up, at mid-morning, at mid-afternoon and again at bedtime. You can use a Castor oil pack. Soak a piece of white flannel in warm Castor oil, wring out excess and place over the affected area. You then cover it with plastic wrap and apply heat using a heating pad or hot water bottle. Do this twice daily for about one hour. Reduce pain by alternating hot and cold applications. Soak the joint in hot water for three minutes and then in cold water for a half minute. Do this about three times, Use an Epsom salt foot bath. Put 2 to 3 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a pan or basin of hot water big enough to put your foot in. Soak your foot for about a 1/2 hour. You can also take a whole body bath in Epsom salts. This is especially helpful if the gout pain is in another part of the body. There are usually instructions on the Epsom salts package but you should use about one or two cups. Any one of these remedies should work to give you some immediate relief, but in order to eliminate gout for good you will need to do some research on how to lower uric acid levels in your body. You should also support your kidneys using supplements, herbs and foods that improve kidney function. 3 Tips For Being A Successful Distance Learning Instructor

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Kris Bickell Are you looking to teach an online course for the first time? Or have you already taught online but are looking for some tips to help you become more effective? The world of online learning is expanding at a rapid pace. More courses are being offered and more students are enrolling every semester. And while teaching an online course can be done while sitting at your computer in your pajamas, being an effective online instructor requires a good deal of practice and preparation. Of course, teaching online does take away the face to face involvement with students. Nothing can take the place of seeing a student smile after finally understanding a difficult concept. But online teaching can be even more rewarding than on-campus teaching, when done well. What makes an effective online instructor? While good teaching involves a large number of qualities and techniques, effective online teaching centers on three main points: 1) You must be clear about your expectations! Since students are not sitting right in front of you, it is extremely important to be very clear. Since you cannot see the students, you cannot see them sitting with a puzzled look while nodding their head in agreement. How do you know if you are clear enough? Ask the students.Carefully evaluate the quality of the work, and how close the finished product matches the instructions.Have a colleague read your material before the course begins. If student evaluations are distributed at the end of the semester, you can use the feedback to help you improve your course and teaching techniques but keep in mind that by then you can no longer help the students learn what you want them to learn! 2) You must communicate frequentlyand effectively! Most students will expect you to be sitting at your computer whenever they send you a question by email. Of course, that is not practical, nor is it reasonable. So it is a good idea to give students a time frame in which you will respond, with 24-48 hours being typical. And its not enough to just communicate frequently. You must also communicate effectively. While some students (especially new online students) will want you to take them by the hand through each step, if you already have clearly written instructions, you can direct them to the instructions. Keep in mind that most students are not asking you questions to bother you usually, they just want to make sure they are doing what you want them to do. So be understanding, even when you get questions that make you shake your head. If you get the same questions frequently, it is a good idea to save the questions and your responses to create a frequently asked questions section. 3) You must let your personality shine through! If students just wanted to read a book, they wouldnt need you to read it for them. So, when teaching online, avoid taking the easy way out by simply posting a few readings and having students answer the questions: Add a little of your personality to your assignments and communications (but be careful when using humor, as it is difficult to convey online).Give real life examples that you have learned from being the subject matter expert.Create interesting and interactive assignments to help students really learn the material. Good teaching, like being good at anything, takes practice. If you are clear - if you stay in close contact with your students - and if you create an interesting learning experience, you will be the online instructor that students want to learn from! Kris Bickell is the director of distance learning at a small private University in Connecticut, and an experienced online instructor. He is also the owner of Hi-Speed-Internet.com, which offers tips to help you improve your computer speed. High Octane RC Cars - The Ultimate Toy for Both Kids and Adults

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Chadder McD. The need for speed is in all of us. No matter if it’s buried deep down inside you, its there, just waiting to be satisfied. Youll know it when you pick up a remote control, pull a trigger and see an RC car shoot by you faster than what you ever thought was possible. Super fast RC cars and trucks will elicit a weird, awe-struck smile from 8 year olds and 50 year olds alike. Some of the fastest RC cars and trucks come prepared as ready-to-run/race or RTR. The RTR RC vehicles are available at many hobby stores, but to find the greatest deals, you don’t need to look further than the computer your sitting in front of. Retailers online of RTR RC trucks, cars and boats most often provide a broader selection of trucks, cars and boats than even the largest hobby stores. Also, since they dont have a physical store to maintain, they can offer products to you a lot cheaper than a typical hobby store. There are a few different types of RC vehicles available and its expensive to learn which type would best suit its driver. A basic model RC car is the battery powered type. Many advancements have taken place in battery power output, especially with NiMh and L-I batteries (Nickel Metal Hydride and Lithium Ion, respectively) becoming more popular and widely available. The result has been faster battery powered RC trucks, cars and boats and theyre a good bet for younger children who might not foresee the dangers of running a 70Mph gas powered RC car into a brick wall or something else much more expensive like Dad’s new car for example. Gas powered RC cars, trucks and boats have been around for awhile and ready-to-run models can reach top speeds of 50+Mph. Thats fast, plain and simple. With a little know-how and the proper parts, anyone is capable of upgrading their rc vehicle to reach even faster top speeds. The gas powered RC vehicles start at around $100. The nitrous powered RC vehicles are a combination of gas powered RC cars and trucks that use a special nitro methane fuel mixture to create top speeds that are nothing less than scary. There are nitro powered RC vehicles that come ready-to-run and itll cost you around $300 for the pleasure. These cars have been modified by professional hobbyists to reach speeds of over 100Mph in good conditions. Beleive it or not, these little engines can produce similiar horsepower as that of a low-end lawnmower, this can only result in one thing: Speed. After getting your car, the only need to get started is a debris free parking lot, fuel and batteries for the remote control. You might as well haul along some friends as well, because they’ll be astonished when you tell them the blazing speeds your toy can hit. This high-octane hobby is one thatll sweep the nation before you know it because no matter who you are - blazing fast is always fun. Hiring Employees: Checking References To Insure Quality People

Monday, March 10th, 2008

By Jeff Casmer When you must take on employees for your business, you will have to go through the hiring process. After preliminary interviews, you should be able to narrow the field to three or four top candidates. And that is the time to do a little detective work to insure you have the right (and honest) employees coming in. It’s estimated that up to one-third of job applicants lie about their experience and educational achievements on their resumes or job applications. No matter how sterling the person seems in the interview process, a few phone calls upfront to check out their claims could save you a lot of hassle - and even legal battles - later on. Today, courts are increasingly holding employers liable for crimes employees commit on the job, such as drunk driving, when it is determined that the employer could have been expected to know about prior convictions for similar offenses. Unfortunately, getting that information has become harder and harder to do. Fearful of reprisals from former employees, many firms have adopted policies that forbid releasing detailed information. Generally, the investigating party is referred to a personnel department, which supplies dates of employment, title and salary - nothing more. There are ways to dig deeper, however. Try to avoid the human resources department if at all possible. Instead, try calling the person’s former supervisor directly. While the supervisor may be required to send you to personnel, sometimes you’ll get lucky and get the person on a day he or she feels like talking. Sometimes, too, a supervisor can tip you off without saying anything that will get him or her in trouble. Consider the supervisor who, when contacted by one potential employer, said, “I only give good references.” When the employer asked, “What can you tell me about X?” the supervisor repeated, “I only give good references.” Without saying anything, he said it all. Depending on the position, you may also want to do education checks. You can call any college or university’s admissions department to verify degrees and dates of attendance. Some universities will require a written request or a signed waiver from the applicant before releasing any kind of information to you. If the person is going to be driving a company vehicle, you may want to do a motor vehicle check with the motor vehicle department. In fact, you may want to do this even if he or she will not be driving for you. Vehicle checks can uncover patterns of negligence or drug and alcohol problems that he or she might have. If your company deals with property management, such as maintenance or cleaning, you may want to consider a criminal background check as well. Unfortunately, national criminal records and even state records are not coordinated. The only way to obtain criminal records is to go to individual courthouses in each county. Although you can’t run all over the state to check into a person’s record, it’s generally sufficient to investigate records in three counties birthplace, current residence and residence preceding the current residence. For certain positions, such as those that will give an employee access to your company’s cash (a cashier or accounting clerk, for instance), a credit check may be a good idea as well. You can find credit reporting bureaus in any Yellow Pages. They will be able to provide you with a limited credit and payment history. While you should not rely on this as the sole reason not to hire someone (credit reports are notorious for containing errors), a credit report can contribute to a total picture of irresponsible behavior. And if the person will have access to large sums of money at your company, hiring someone who is in serious debt is probably not a very good idea. Be aware, however, that if a credit check plays any role in your decision not to hire someone, you must inform them that they were turned down in part because of their credit report.
