10 Essential Food Safety Tips For AIDS Sufferers

April 28th, 2008 by bertenichols

By Terry Nicholls Persons with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) areespecially susceptible to illness from food-borne pathogens.Because they’re at higher risk for severe illness or death, affected persons must be vigilant when handling and cookingfoods. Here are some recommendations to help preventbacterial food-borne illness. 1. When shopping for raw and cooked perishable foods, besure the food is being stored at a safe temperature in thestore. Don’t select perishable food from a non-refrigeratedaisle display. Never choose packages which are torn orleaking. 2. When ordering food from the deli department, be sure theclerk washes his hands between handling raw and cooked itemsor puts on new plastic gloves. Don’t buy cooked ready-to-eatitems which are touching raw items or are displayed in thesame case. 3. Don’t buy cans that are dented, leaking, or bulging; foodin cracked glass jars; or food in torn packaging. Tamper-resistant safety seals should be intact. Safety buttons onmetal lids should be down and should not move or make aclicking noise when pushed. Do not use any product beyondits expiration date! 4. Immediately refrigerate or freeze perishable foods aftertransporting them home. Make sure thawing juices from meatand poultry do not drip on other foods. Leave eggs in theircarton for storage and don’t place them in the door of therefrigerator. Keep the refrigerator clean. 5. Food stored constantly at 0 F will always be safe. Onlythe quality suffers with lengthy storage. It’s of no concernif a product date expires while the product is frozen.Freezing keeps food safe by preventing the growth of micro-organisms that cause both food spoilage and food-borneillness. Once thawed, however, these microbes can againbecome active so handle thawed items as any perishable food. 6. Store canned foods and other shelf stable products in acool, dry place. Never put them above the stove, under thesink, in a damp garage or basement, or any place exposed tohigh or low temperature extremes. 7. Wash hands, utensils, can openers, cutting boards, andcountertops in hot, soapy water before and after coming incontact with raw meat, poultry, or fish. 8. Many cases of food-borne illness are caused by take-out,restaurant, and deli-prepared foods. Avoid the same foodswhen eating out as you would at home. Meat, poultry, andfish should be ordered well done; if the food arrivesundercooked, it should be sent back. 9. Wash cutting boards with hot, soapy water after each use;then rinse and air dry or pat dry with fresh paper towels.Non-porous acrylic, plastic, or glass boards and solid woodboards can be washed in an automatic dishwasher (laminatedboards may crack and split). 10. Do not eat raw or undercooked meat, poultry, fish, oreggs. For people with AIDS, the most important thing is touse a meat thermometer to be sure meat, fish, eggs, andcasseroles reach at least 160 F. Roast whole poultry to180 F; poultry breasts to 170 F. When reheating foods inthe microwave, cover and rotate or stir foods once or twiceduring cooking and check the food in several spots with athermometer. Weight Loss Reality Check-Why Losing 2 Pounds A Week May Not Be As Easy As You Think

April 26th, 2008 by bertenichols

By Meri Raffetto Do you ever wonder why your neighbor seemed to drop weight in a few weeks on a fad diet but you are not seeing results as you begin making healthy lifestyle changes? Does this mean that healthy lifestyle changes don’t work? There is a misconception of how weight loss occurs and the diet society we live in has us believing that if we don’t see the pounds drop each week then the particular program or routine you have adapted isn’t working. This isn’t exactly true. Here are the facts. Physiologically we know that it takes 3500 calories to lose one pound of body fat. So in order to lose 2 pounds a week, which is considered slow weight loss in the diet world, you have to make a 1000 calorie deficit every single day. For a few this can happen easily, but for most it really isn’t that easy to make a 1000 calorie deficit and more often than not it means you have to make immediate and drastic changes to your diet and exercise every day. Many diet plans and programs will put you on a very low calorie level (1200 calories seems to be the magic number). This will most likely result in that 1000 calorie deficit but it also may decrease your metabolism and is a very tough calorie level to live with long term. We know this is true and the proof is looking at the percentage of people who regain their weight after dieting with these types of programs. We also know that it takes about 6 weeks of consistent exercise before you begin to see changes in your body shape. This is just the starting point- 1 months, not two weeks. Think about the rate that you gained weight. We usually don’t gain 50 pounds in 6 months. We gain weight gradually over time and the process works exactly the same for weight loss. Rest assure, when you don’t see immediate results it doesn’t mean your efforts aren’t working. You may make a 200 calorie deficit each day which will still lead to weight loss but over a longer period of time. Let’s break this down and look at the true picture of weight loss: 1000 calorie deficit (2 pounds weight loss each week) - Quicker results. - Motivation is strong because you can see quick results. - Have to work harder and make significant changes right away (to give you an example a 30 minute brisk walk will burn around 175 calories- you would still have a long way to go to reach a 1000 calorie deficit for this day). - Requires an increased amount of focus. - Long term compliance is significantly decreased- we know that when people make more than a 400 calorie deficit they are less likely to stick with the changes long term and end up regaining their weight. - Doesn’t allow time to change habits. It takes 30 days to change one habit. When you try to jump into new eating and exercise habits all at once, you have a higher probability of quitting all together because it is too overwhelming. - Often leads people to be overly focused or obsessed about food, counting, and scales. 100 400 calorie deficit - Results happen over months not weeks (this varies; some people may lose 1/2 - 1 pound per week but it is an overall slower process). - Can be frustrating not seeing results right away when you are making positive changes. You have to find ways to self motivate other than the scale. - Still requires focus but you can focus on a few things at a time instead of trying to adapt 10 -15 change. This allows you to focus on bigger obstacles that continue to get in the way such as life long conditioning, food cravings, or emotional/stress eating. - Gives you time and space to change habits which results in better long term compliance. You can focus on a few things at once to build new habits. - Significantly better long term results. More likely to stick with the changes and not regain the weight. - Less obsessive about food and counting. It doesn’t end up consuming your whole life. Ultimately the choice is up to you but I think it is important to have awareness around how this works. There is no right or wrong answer. I can tell you that people who do find long term results where they don’t have to obsess about dieting and food all the time are the ones who are making a 100-400 calorie deficit. You will find that every well researched professional program out there promotes a much slower process. If you want to see quicker results, just be prepared to work a little harder and commit to long term changes. I saw a video on yahoo health the other day with a woman sharing her weight loss story. She said the first change she made was going to the gym for a half hour, 5 days a week. This is all she worked on in the beginning and over time she started changing her eating habits. She shared that her weight didn’t budge for the first 2 months but then she started changing shape, lost a significant amount of weight, looks fantastic and has kept it off. She is happy and content with her lifestyle this is the true face of long term weight loss. It is committing to the lifestyle and allowing your body time to respond. Learning about your body and making healthy lifestyle changes isn’t a diet or plan. It is something that works every time, but you have to be patient and not give up when you don’t see the scale move right away. This is a numbers game and it is all about making changes in your diet and exercise, that you can live with, that result in a calorie deficit. TV Cooking Programmes Drive a Surge of Interest in Culinary Art Schools

April 24th, 2008 by bertenichols

By Anne Sprigpitt Over 53,000 people last month searched on the internet for information on culinary schools and this data is from just one search engine. This increasing trend for people looking for culinary art schools and for careers in the culinary world is believed to be driven by the significant rise in cooking and culinary related programmes which have been aired on television especially over the last few months. This has been coupled with the new high profiles of so called celebrity chefs, further driving interest in the field. Anne Sprigpitt owner of http://1culinaryartschools.com says, Over the last few months weve seen a significant increase in the numbers of people using our site to find more information about culinary arts schools. Much of this is down to the popularity of TV cooking programmes such as Master Chef, Saturday Kitchen and Great British Menu, which have been screening on the BBC over recent months. The main problem many people who search for information on culinary art schools is that they are overwhelmed by the number of different options available to them. For example there are French cooking schools, Thai cooking schools, Le Cordon Bleu schools, Italian cooking schools and many more. There are so many choices they just dont know where to start looking My advice to anyone who is looking for a career in cooking and wants to join a culinary art school is to narrow down your areas of interest, so that you identify what area of cooking you are most passionate about and go for it. The most important thing is doing what you love. Cooking to a very high standard is not easy and requires many hours of dedication, sweat and tears. If the increase in popularity of culinary art schools continues, we should see a new wave of celebrity chefs coming through over the next few years as more people see it as a viable way to achieve success and fame. Achieving Real Weight Loss

April 14th, 2008 by bertenichols

By Marjorie Geiser The state of health in America is not very positive. As of today, according to the Center for Disease Control, an estimated 65% of adult Americans are considered overweight and 30% of those are considered obese. Cancer much of it preventable — has now surpassed heart disease as the number one cause of death and the number of people who know they have diabetes is now up to 14.6 million. But what are the causes of increased weight gain, what is science telling us about this condition, and most importantly, what can people do about it? Its no surprise that most Americans are eating more than they need and are less active than they were meant to be. According to recent findings by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average daily caloric intake of Americans is 2,757. Compared to 1970, this is an increase of 523 calories per day. It takes roughly 3500 calories to gain or lose a pound of weight. If a person increased or decreased their daily intake by 500 calories a day, there is the difference in weight you can gain or lose in a week with that difference. Its very easy to add an extra 500 calories a day to a persons diet. Just a large order of French fries will do it! The same is true with NOT eating that extra order of French fries, however. Although some statistics show that there is a slight increase in leisure time activity across the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), physical activity drops in children from 69% at ages 12 and 13 to 38% for young people between 18 and 21. Between 1991 and 1997, the CDC reports that the percentage of students who attended a daily physical education class dropped from 42% to 27%. If adults are not staying physically active, and children are not getting physical exercise in school, the message they receive is that exercise is not important. Studies show that if children do not learn healthy eating habits and exercise habits when young, they will likely struggle with healthy habits as adults. Could we be killing our kids by not taking care of our own health, setting healthy examples for them, today? But not all people struggling with weight are just sitting around, not exercising and eating ice cream and French fries. Could there be something more going on? Researchers are now looking at what genetics can tell us about weight gain. Some people suffer from the need to eat large amounts of food, no matter how full they feel. Researchers are looking at a substance in our body called Leptin. Studying mice, they find that those mice who have very little Leptin in their bodies tend to eat more, thus they gain more weight, suffering from obesity. But there still is no real solution available for people suffering with large amounts of weight. Although supplement companies have quickly jumped on the bandwagon to capitalize on what preliminary research is telling us about Leptin, these supplements are still false promises that just guarantee emptying the pocketbooks of the hopeful who feel there is no other help for them. What about the claim that some people just cant lose weight, no matter what they do? I have a program that requires clients to document their intake of everything they eat for 30 days, sending me their daily report. What consistently has developed from this is a new awareness to the client of hidden times they eat. Its common for a client to say, I had no idea I grabbed ice cream when I was mad at my husband, or, I had no idea I was eating that bag of chips while working at the computer! As a consequence, every client who goes on this program loses weight. Many people state, as a matter of fact, that they just cant lose weight anymore. Many claim its their age, menopause, you name it. However, when real changes are made, the body does still respond, no matter what the age. In every case that a persons intake is closely monitored, and the calories are decreased, people have lost weight. Even in the case of a 1000 pound man. At home, all he did was gain and gain. By the time he was over 1000 pounds, unable to breathe or move, he was hospitalized. In the hospital, he was put on a strict 1200 calorie diet. While there for six months, on this diet, he lost 600 pounds. Although in later interviews he claimed he never ate much at home and didnt know why he couldnt lose weight at home, the facts speak for themselves. It still is just a matter of calories in versus calories out. So what does a person do? According to the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), there are three keys to permanent success to weight loss. The NWCR was established in 1994 by two university professors and is the largest prospective investigation of long-term successful weight loss maintenance in the country. Currently the NWCR has over 5,000 people who have lost at least 30 pounds of weight and kept it off for at least a year who are eligible to join the ongoing research study. What researchers have discovered is, regardless of how people have lost the weight, keeping it off has included several necessary consistent steps: Success for these people have included following a low-fat, low-calorie diet and regular exercise. However, lets look at a few more details; many successful NWCR participants exercise for a total of 60-90 minutes a day, regularly. Many break it up through the day, and almost all claim they hated it to begin with, but now its just a part of their lives. They made a choice to avoid regaining their weight and love their lean and active lifestyles. Another consistent aspect of participants is they all eat breakfast. This is another habit that many had to get used to, but realize how important it is to eat a good meal at the beginning of the day in order to avoid cravings and high calorie snack foods later in the day. Three-quarters of all participants weigh themselves on a weekly basis, just so they can catch any increases that may slowly be developing, and take corrective action before its out of hand. Support is critical to success. Many people who struggle with weight already know that they just cant do it, themselves. They have proven this. However, often they are unwilling to admit they need help, thus they struggle for their entire lives. First of all, when someone has emotional eating issues, its critical that they seek the help of a qualified therapist they can work well with. Someone they can share their feelings with, who they feel they can confide in and trust. Next, its important to also find a Registered Dietitian (RD) to help them learn how to apply the wealth of nutrition knowledge they already know to their own lives. There are many people who call themselves nutritionists and many food coaches, but these people are not educated in all aspects of nutrition the way an RD is. The third important piece of the support team is to find someone who can help them learn how to become more active. If a person is very overweight, its important to find someone experienced in this population, not a hunk who now likes to train others to look like hunks or competitive body builders. Most people are not interested in looking like they just won the Mr/Ms America pageant; they just want to lose weight, feel great and feel they can enjoy shopping for clothes again. The ultimate key is to eat fewer calories than the body needs. However, with exercise, the need for decreased calories will be less than if a person tried to lose weight by dieting alone. The topic of TOO few calories is beyond the scope of this article, but if a person ate too few calories, they then will burn their own body muscle tissue for the needed fuel, thus defeating the purpose of exercise, which is to increase lean body mass so the body will burn more calories at rest. However, once a person learns to listen to their own body cues, they can learn how to tell when they are eating too little, as well as too much. So, first they control their calorie intake. Then they do some type of physical activity. As we have seen above, this must be consistent. It could be as simple as taking a walk, but it should be every day, every month, for the rest of their life. Most of the participants in the NWCR site walking as their primary exercise. Not a day here and there, then skip a week; it has to be consistent. Once the walking gets easy, then there should be some type of activity that increases muscle endurance or strength. Weight training isnt the only activity that can do this, although its the most common. I challenge everyone who is reading this article to think of what activity you would like to do if your weight was not an issue; it may be wall climbing, it may be hiking a mountain, it may be snow skiing, maybe Pilates or Yoga. Its a hard road to travel when a person has a large amount of weight to lose. They feel like there is just no hope and its too hard to even attempt it. Most in this position have tried more times than theyd like to admit. Or, they have allowed life to get away from them, and they now look in the mirror with disgust, but just feel overwhelmed and dont understand how to get their old body back. They feel they have no control over their life. It is possible! Read through some of the success stories from participants in the NWCR, http://www.nwcr.ws/stories.htm. Just as with anything else in life, though, if you want to make it happen, you have to work through the struggles to achieve the rewards. Native Americans Are Renewing Their Traditions - Here Is One Way

April 10th, 2008 by bertenichols

By Dale Pindling One way that Native groups have attempted to renew and retain their traditions have been through ceremonies. In the past, ceremonies have been an important part of Native American tradition and in the twentieth century the natives have tried to revive these ritualistic actions. An example of some of these new ceremonies can be found in the Native American church. Native American church members spend whole Saturday nights in special ritual action. Led by a roadman the members smoke cigarettes which are rolled inside of corn husks. The group also ingests a portion of the peyote plant which gives individuals the feeling of being high or filled with inspiration. They also sing traditional songs with accompaniment of the drum and gourd rattle. These songs are sung in specific manner and rhythm in order to add to the effects of the peyote plant. At certain periods of the ritual (midnight and daybreak), water is used, as members splash each other and then consume water from a container. At the end of the ritual members partake of a shared breakfast to conclude the meeting. These kinds of ceremonies give the natives a chance to be a people again and to embrace their own culture. The majority of Native Americans have become Christianized and have almost totally assimilated into North American culture and forgot where they have come from. The spending of the whole night is significant because of the bond that it has the power to create for the Native Indian culture. As all members are together in their most joyful states singing and dancing a connection is built and/ or reinforced in the best way possible. Also, the meetings such as the births, funerals, send offs and welcomes look to re-establish connections within the community and traditional actions. Get More Leads From Your Website

April 7th, 2008 by bertenichols

By Danny Flamberg There is a movement afoot to make B2B websites more productive demand generation tools. Its about time. The key to prospect engagement is focus, perspective, content and ease-of-use. You have 15 seconds to hook a prospect who is busy and is clicking through because something prompted him or her to find you. From the first nanosecond they hit your page, its your game to lose. Anything not clear, not easy, not obvious, not intuitive or anything irritating prompts an exit click. Remember nobody is buying on the first visit. So the website must be geared toward the beginning of, what you hope will be, an extended selling conversation. Unfortunately too many sites are geared toward the end game. The principle objective of that first page view is to quickly and persuasively communicate Who you are What you offer What makes you different Why you should talk to us What the prospect should do next Next can be the next instant or sometime during the next year. The first page they see has to be aimed at engaging your most likely customer. You have 15 seconds to sell them on spending a second, third or fourth 15 seconds with you. Its the business equivalent of flashing bedroom eyes across a crowded room. Its not easy, the formula is different for each industry and each buying universe and there is no cyber Spanish Fly. But there are best practices that give you a better-than-average shot at getting and keeping the attention of jittery prospective customers. 1. Create a separate front door a separate home or landing page for prospects. Dont confuse them with all the stuff your customers, your employees or your investors might care about. At this point they have no emotional or intellectual investment in you or your products and services. They hardly care. Dont overwhelm them. 2. Direct their behavior. You have their attention for a moment. Use UI tactics and design to limit their navigational choices. Point them to what you want them to see, read and react to. Dont just apply the save navigational scheme as you have on the site your customers access. Dont get carried away with consistency at the expense of action. Do NOT necessarily mirror the navigation on the client site because it gives prospects too many chances to escape One of my clients had 130 different possible choices on their home page. Wanna guess how many leads they got? Limit their choices. Layout no more than 3 or 4 navigational pathways and mark them clearly. Typical pathways identify offerings by task, by job function and by product set. Make it easy to find and easy to understand what you offer. Enforce a 3 click rule — the answer to any foreseeable question should not be more than 3 clicks away. And navigation should be consistent, persistent and interlaced so you prospects can jump from one pathway to the other without having to return to the Home page. 3. Present everything from the prospects perspective. Focus on predictable pain points or needs. They care about what they care about. If you intersect their concerns, the door opens a sliver. If not, adios amigo. Often their concerns are based on their job title or the functional responsibilities they have. Usually these are similar across companies in an industry or sector. Anticipate this and display your products or services in ways that speak to prospects roles or tasks. 4. Focus on user benefits. Prospect only care about what they win by using your products or services. They are not constantly gazing into their navels and glorying in the features of each product nor are they daydreaming about the latest and greatest refinements and additional bells and whistles baked into the next generation of your stuff. Tell them plainly how what you have will make them faster, more profitable, less hassled, happier, smarter, richer, more productive or more likely to keep their jobs. 5. And before they can discount these claims offer them something; preferably something they will understand as immediately valuable. Make the offer in LARGE TYPE and place it prominently and consistently above the fold on the first page they see. 6. Get prospects involved with the products or services as quickly as possible by using these well established tools and tactics to engage them. - Trial Use from the Home Page - A free trial download offer - A Readiness Survey or Quiz - Flash tours or product demonstrations - Comparisons of your stuff versus your competitors - Product samples or simulations - Videos of client testimonials and use cases 7. You want to immediately communicate the idea that your product or service gives its users a competitive business advantage. And you need to prove this quickly and persuasively by sharpening the value statements and relating them to prospects needs and adding a sense of urgency. You cannot be bashful or reticent. The copy has to be catchy, involving and as promotional as you can be. Take a problem-solution approach to presenting products and their benefits. Images should directly relate to the benefits of using your products or services. Graphics or a grid display of products; their uses and intended users goes a long way to making things clear and easy to understand quickly 8. Prospects will trade data for valuable content but solicit the minimum amount of data to begin a back-and-forth conversation. The more information you require; the more incentive a prospect has to abandon your site and you. At this point there is no relationship and no reciprocal emotional connection. So start by asking just for an e-mail address. It gives you basic opt-in permission and it requires the absolute minimum action and commitment from the prospect. Build-in opportunities to collect an e-mail address at many points throughout the site. Once you have the e-mail address you can ask a prospect questions, gauge his or her satisfaction with your site or your tools and begin to establish if they are truly a lead by assessing their true level of buying authority, need, budget and timetable.
